Perceiving anything and everything that is the unknown as a threat to well-being of self is human nature. The mind aches, yearns to familiarize itself with the supposed ‘extraterrestrial’ phenomenon, but often, finds comfort in hearsay, acknowledges and accepts opinions as hard facts, and in turn, fails to satiate that ache, that yearning of knowledge that could’ve converted it’s fascination into belief, of something new.
‘Vaping? I hear it destroys brain cells’?! ‘Oh man, you really should quit vaping. ‘Don’t wanna end up with a popcorn lung now, do we’? ‘Oh man, E-cigs are pretty much the same thing as smoking. They’re both addictive’
Welcome to the vaping world, an industry that receives wild, unnecessary slack from self-proclaimed critics on the daily. . Oh, and there’s plenty more misinformation that goes around. Sadly, this article has a strict word limit and we’d like to focus on solid facts, for now. So, what exactly is, and E-cigarette?
An electronic cigarette, also sometimes referred to as ‘E-cig’, is a battery-operated mechanism that produces nicotine vapor, as well as nicotine-free vapor for the user to inhale. The objective of vaping is to provide an alternative to smoking, absent the cancerous drawbacks of the habit.
While traditional, combustible cigarettes also deliver nicotine to the system, they do so, bearing a heavy, heart wrenching cost to the user. A lit up cigarette produces about 7000 chemicals in the air, many of which are incredibly toxic to the human body. These include chemicals like tar, carbon monoxide, ammonia, arsenic, amongst other poisonous gases and particles. However, when we talk about E-Cigs, these vaping devices do not involve the burning or emission of tobacco or any such dangerous particles.
In 2015, vaping helped 49 people a day quit smoking. In the UK, Public Health England has declared that vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking. They also released a short clip, depicting the amount of black, sticky tar that forms and resides in the lungs of a heavy smoker. However, nicotine consumed by vaping showed only minor traces of tar formation. The harm brought about by traditional cigarettes pales in comparison to the modern E-cigarette.
Scientists based in the UK discovered that individuals who made the switch from combustible cigarettes to e-cigarettes for a 6 month period had massively reduced levels of toxic and cancerous substances in their bodies compared to those who chose to continue using conventional cigarettes. However, to obtain the desired results, the research indicated an absolute switch to vaping was necessary, rather than carrying on smoking alongside vaping.
Another common misconception about vape is that it can ultimately cause cancer. On the contrary, making the e-cigarette switch reduces the risk of cancer. Chances of obtaining cancer from vaping are about 0.5% of that from cigarette smoking, which says a lot on its own.
